6 Month Progress Report

I've left this post up for posterity. This was my first attempt to start blogging my senior pastor journey. Be kind 😀

So...6 months into my first lead pastor ministry position and things are going great. So far, things seem to be organized and on track for a fall explosion. Over the last several months we have been working quietly behind the scenes preparing the way for an awesome autumn. We are going to hire a worship pastor, have been paving the way for our small group ministries, are ramping up the children's ministry, are in the process of remodeling the gym, had a sprinkler system put in, and even fixed the coke machine! It seems that everything is going to culminate in September-October...and when that happens, hang on! Through the summer, we have maintained a steady attendance. When the fall gets here, we are poised to reach many more for Christ.

One of the things that excites me about Big Spring Nazarene is that we are already bent toward community involvement. There is a long standing tradition here of doing a drive through nativity for the community which thousands experience every year. Because of that, the other community events we have done/will do have all been easy. We hosted an Easter Egg hunt at the local park where we hid 10,000 Easter Eggs and had over 500 show up, we are only a few days away from handing out school supplies to everyone in Big Spring that needs it, we have planned a coat and glove drive in the winter, etc.

God is blessing us and the Big Spring church. We look forward to many great things as we introduce people to the Kingdom of God and disciple them in Kingdom living!

Love Is a Verb: When Comfort Gets Costly

Jesus’ words in Luke 6 stop me cold every time: “Woe to you who are rich, for you have already received your comfort.” He’s not condemning wealth — He’s confronting comfort. And that’s a hard word in a world where we work hard  for  comfort. This third entry in the  Love Is a Verb  series isn’t about money management or guilt. It’s about spiritual numbness — the kind that creeps in when we get so used to our blessings that we stop noticing who’s been left out of them. In Luke 16, Jesus tells the story of a rich man and a poor man named Lazarus. The rich man isn’t cruel. He’s not abusive. He’s just… indifferent. He never noticed the suffering at his gate. And that’s the indictment. This is where biblical justice comes in. We often think of justice as grand gestures or political positions. What is the gospel?

I've left this post up for posterity. This was my first attempt to start blogging my senior pastor journey. Be kind 😀 I recently recorded some 2 minute devotions at the local radio station for a segment they produce called "Look up and Live." They play them every morning between 6-6.30 here in Big Spring (The call letters are KBST if you want to look them up on the web and try to catch one, pretty early though). The things I talked about have been pretty heavy on me, so I thought I would put them here in print also. I'm very interested to see what everyone thinks. The word “gospel” literally means good news. That is why when you ask most people what the gospel message is they tell you it is that Jesus died on the cross for our sins. This surely is good news for us! As I was reading through the gospel of John a while back, I began to notice that Jesus often refers to “good news.” I became intrigued. What is the “good news” or “gospel” that Jesus spoke about so often?...
